Over 15,000 Attend First Ever Crewe Krazy Races, Raising Over £10,000 for Local Charities
Crewe Town Council recently teamed up with touring soapbox festival organisers Krazy Races to bring a thrilling Soapbox Derby event to Crewe!
Crewe town centre was abuzz with excitement on Sunday 14th July, as the inaugural Crewe Krazy Races soapbox derby attracted over 15,000 spectators and raised more than £10,000 for local charities. The event brought together 30 teams, including businesses like Crewe Lyceum Theatre, KR Fleet Solutions, AO.com, and The Cooperative Group, as well as charities and local groups such as Crewe Heritage Trust, Crewe UTC and headline charities St Luke’s Hospice and Hopes & Beams.
Teams began their downhill race on Ford Lane, taking a sharp right onto Broad Street and speeding past The Brooklands, where enthusiastic crowds cheered them on. Brooklands park was transformed into a vibrant event village, featuring local food traders, family entertainment, a large screen for spectators, and a funfair.
During the event's lunch break, the BBC took to the track to film a special head-to-head Blue Peter episode. Presenters raced against each other to see who would be the fastest, adding an extra layer of excitement to the day.
Seven unique winners were celebrated on the day. Crewe Heritage Carters received the Best Krazy Races Team award for their impressive miniature Inter-City 125. JoJo’s Day Nursery won the public vote, while Haslington pub The Hawk Inn Mad earned the Best Crew award. Scooby Crewe was recognised for Best Designed Kart. The top three teams were SK Bombardiers from Stockport in third place, Crewe UTC Racing in second, and local agricultural company ironically called Spreadwise Snails taking first place.
Danny Scoffin, Head of Brand & Strategic Development for Krazy Races, expressed his joy: “Living in Crewe, it was heartwarming to see the community come together and enjoy the event. A massive thank you to our friends and partners at Crewe Town Council, our teams, sponsors, and all the spectators for making this a memorable day.”
Following the event, Sarah Belcher Events and Crewe Town Council implemented technology to determine the official attendance, revealing that over 15,000 people participated in the event throughout the day. Besides providing a free, enjoyable day for thousands, the event also successfully raised over £10,000 for headline charities Hopes & Beams, St Luke’s Hospice and other local causes.
98% of attendees who completed the event feedback form would like to see Krazy Races return to Crewe in the future!
Crewe Town Council commented:
“Krazy Races was a fantastic free-to-attend day out for everyone! We are delighted with the community response to the event and the positive impact on local businesses, many of which reported an increase in visitors on the event day.”
