More than 10,000 people gathered together in Shrewsbury’s Quarry Park to watch teams race for gold at the first Krazy Races soapbox event since the coronavirus pandemic.

Businesses, charities and individual teams spent May 29th zooming down the racetrack in the Quarry Park, raising thousands of pounds for a range of great local causes including headline charity Macmillan Cancer Support.

But it was the Battlefield Tractor Boys who were crowned the winners after the final race beating the Hatfield Landrover team by just a second, with Shropshire Blue, a team of friends who were winners at the 2019 event, coming in third.

Richard Evans, of Battlefield Machinery Ltd, said: “We had a fantastic time, not just because we won, but we’ve had a laugh building the cart, and the day here, with our family, friends and the other teams has been fantastic!

“The organisation of the whole event is awesome and great for Shrewsbury! Well done Krazy Races. We’ll be back!”

The team, who all work at the Battlefield Enterprise Park based business in Shrewsbury, were raising money for Cancer Research UK, a cause close to many people’s hearts due to the amount of people affected by the disease.

The weekend’s event saw karts of all shapes and sizes hitting the track - with Ghostbusters, Hot Wheels and more among them. Thousands of spectators cheered from the sidelines as each of the 27 teams took their turn to race through the Quarry Park and the final 10 teams took a second run to determine the winner.

Prizes were also handed out for the Kraziest Crew which went to Middas Interior Solutions who were dressed as Thunderbirds and the Best Team, as voted by other teams, went to Harry’s Heroes - the team representing the Harry Johnson Trust - which also scooped the Sponsors Choice Award after being picked by sponsors Hatfields.

Most Entertaining Team went to Darwin’s Devils, who were raising money for Home Essentials - Shrewsbury’s Furniture Scheme - and their Ghostbusters kart and the Most Kraziest Car went to a group of friends who created a Toy Story 2 themed kart.

Sarah Belcher, organiser and founder of Krazy Races, said it was a fantastic day and one which started off the racing season in style.

She said: “We’re over the moon to have seen so many teams and spectators at Shrewsbury’s Krazy Races. We’re estimating over 10,000 people came to the Quarry

Park to watch!

“The events industry was heavily impacted by the pandemic, so it’s great to see our soapbox event back up and running with crazier soapboxes than ever. Congratulations to all of the winners and to everyone that took part - we hope you all had a really great day and raised lots of money for charity.

“We are now really looking forward to taking the event nationwide and heading to both Wolverhampton and Northwich in the coming months.”
